LMC Receives Highest Grade for Serving Michigan Veterans

BENTON HARBOR, MI – For the second consecutive year, Lake Michigan College has received Gold-Level certification from the Michigan Veterans Affairs Office, earning the top mark from the state agency. Colleges and universities are graded on seven important criteria for serving veterans, and the Gold standard is the highest certification available. Schools must offer services in at least six of the seven areas to qualify.

"Congratulations on becoming a Gold-Level Veteran Friendly school for the 2025-26 academic year. Your commitment to helping veterans succeed was evident in your application, and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency is honored to recognize your institution. We commend your institution on its hard work and dedication to veterans and dependents," said Lexis Jones, Director of Strategy and Outreach for the Michigan Veterans Affairs Office, in an announcement letter.

LMC is serving nearly 100 veterans this semester. In addition to meeting state standards, the college offers numerous services to veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much for the country.

“It is an honor to serve our Veterans and military affiliated students, and I am thankful to work for an institution that prioritizes their well-being.  Some of the benefits we offer include a private VA lounge that we keep stocked with snacks and drinks as well as the equipment necessary for them to complete their coursework; and a new program supported by our foundation that offers a one-time gift of a free laptop or $250 scholarship that the student can request at any time during their studies with us. We work to consistently implement and improve on the benefits and services that we offer to our VA students and look forward to continually growing the program.”said Becky French, Veterans Affairs and International Students Specialist.

"This recognition is another example of Lake Michigan College's focus on student success. Our brave veterans have served our country with dignity, and they are an important part of our college community at LMC," said LMC President Dr. Trevor Kubatzke.
