Cathy Yates: 2026 Gladys Peeples-Burks Alumni Service Award

Cathy Yates’s connection to Lake Michigan College began close to home, in the Benton Harbor community where she has spent a lifetime serving others. She attended LMC from 1975 to 1981 and earned an Associate degree in Sociology. She went on to further her education, earning a bachelor’s degree in Human Services from Spring Arbor University and a master’s degree from Siena Heights University.

Cathy dedicated 30 years to public service as a social worker with the State of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Throughout her career, she worked closely with residents and families across the community, providing vital services and building relationships that would shape the course of her professional life.

Today, Cathy serves as Supervisor for Berrien Charter Township, where she oversees a team of roughly 90 employees dedicated to community service. Her career has remained focused on improving the quality of life for local residents, including championing the development of senior housing so older adults can age with dignity and a high quality of life.

Cathy’s civic involvement extends throughout Michigan, where she has collaborated with teams addressing housing and utility issues affecting families in need. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the LMC Alumni Association, and the Southwest Michigan Chamber.

She also serves as a Trustee at Second Baptist Church, reflecting an enduring commitment to service, leadership, and strengthening her community.
