Lake Michigan College Receives Gold-Level Certification for Serving Michigan Veterans

BENTON HARBOR, MI – For the third consecutive year, Lake Michigan College has received Gold-Level certification as a Michigan Veteran-Friendly School from the Michigan Veterans Affairs Office, earning the top mark from the state agency. Colleges and universities are graded on seven important criteria for serving veterans, and the Gold standard is the highest certification available. Schools must offer services in at least six of the seven areas to qualify.

"This designation recognizes your school’s commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for Michigan’s veterans, service members, and military-connected students," said Joe Saur, Education Analyst for the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, in an announcement letter.

LMC is serving nearly 120 veterans and active service members this semester. In addition to meeting state standards, the college offers numerous services to veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much for the country.

“Earning Gold-Level certification for a third year in a row reflects the care our team puts into every veteran and military-connected student who walks through our doors. Our private VA lounge, stocked with snacks, drinks, and the equipment students need to complete their coursework, gives them a place to connect and recharge. Through our foundation, each student can also request a free laptop or a $250 scholarship at any point during their studies. We’re always looking for ways to improve what we offer, and I’m proud to work at a college that makes our veterans a priority.” said Becky French, Veterans Affairs and International Students Specialist.

"This recognition for a third consecutive year is another example of Lake Michigan College's focus on student success. Our brave veterans have served our country with dignity, and they are an important part of our college community," said LMC President Dr. Ken Flowers.
