Dear LMC Class of 2020,

My name is Nicole Crenshaw, your fellow classmate and nursing major here at LMC. Just like all of you, I’ve been counting the days until graduation since the beginning of the Spring semester. Well, probably even longer, but we will just say since the beginning of the Spring semester.

Due to unforeseen circumstances that COVID-19 has presented every graduate across the country, we’ve been required to adapt to an ever-changing situation. All the feelings that arise from online learning and proctored exams and postponed or cancelled ceremonies, graduation parties, and vacations, I can assure you, you are not alone. I commend you for your tireless efforts to make the best of now.  

While this pandemic has transformed what normal is for us and our lives, I’d like to offer up a few words of encouragement:  

  • Perseverance is a “continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition.” Based upon my experience here at LMC, I can say confidently, that we are all a part of a culture that empowers us through education and innovation with perseverance as a main ingredient to make it all happen.  
  • Not having an in-person ceremony does not diminish how HUGE of an accomplishment this is for you! Celebrate yourself!  
  • For those of us who weren’t well equipped to adapt to an online learning environment I commend you for pushing through and utilizing the resources available to you.  
  • We made it through last year’s polar vortex, we’ll surely make it through this; plus attending class with bed hair, pajamas, and fuzzy socks was a bonus.

To the staff and instructors, I want to thank you not only for working with us during these trying times, but also for making yourselves available to us whenever we needed you. We did it Class of 2020! From having nice and crazy weather, lots of snow days (last year) to a crazy quarantine, we made it through. It might have been easy, hard and stressful at times, but we are Talon Tough. And what lies ahead from here on out we can get through anything. We have fought hard for our degrees, don't give up on what you want to do in your future. To all of my instructors, thank you for helping me in times when I needed it as I am an "older" student! But I got through it with lots of prayers, a strong family, friends and the instructors. A special shout out to Mrs. Duis at the Niles Campus who shared her time with me as she prayed for and with me during a difficult time in my first year attending LMC. So, to all of the instructors and my academic advisor Kamala, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do!
